Historic restaurant in York

The "House of the Trembling Madness // Stonegate" in York, England, is an extraordinary restaurant and pub characterized by its historic atmosphere, unique decor, and impressive selection of food and drinks. It is housed in a medieval building with origins dating back to 1180, making it one of the oldest of its kind in the city. This Norman house has a rich history marked by both prosperity and hardship, fires and urban changes, still radiating the charm of times gone by. The rustic wooden beams, once used on ships sailing the seas, and the preserved cobblestones give the place an authentic, almost timeless aura.

Pub with unique decor

Upon entering, visitors first find themselves in a shop area that boasts an impressive selection of beers from around the world—ranging from traditional English ales to Belgian specialties and modern craft beers. A staircase leads to the main pub area, which is hidden on the upper floor. This space is known for its quirky decor, including a collection of mounted animal heads on the walls, giving the establishment a distinctive character that perfectly fits the name "House of the Trembling Madness"—a nod to delirium tremens, the notorious condition associated with excessive alcohol consumption.

Regional dishes in York

The culinary offerings are heavily inspired by the Yorkshire region, placing an emphasis on high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. The "Yorkshire Platter" is particularly noteworthy—a lavish sharing board served with a selection of regional cheeses, cured meats, and pickled vegetables. Hearty tapas dishes are also popular, such as a spicy chicken and chorizo stew accompanied by fresh bread. Beer lovers have the opportunity to pair their meals with one of the many beers on offer—be it a robust cask ale or a fruity keg beer that harmonizes perfectly with the flavors of the cuisine.

Cozy beer pub in England

The atmosphere at the "House of the Trembling Madness" is cozy and inviting, marked by a blend of medieval charm and modern casualness. The furnishings, featuring solid oak benches and tables, encourage guests to settle in, while the friendly staff ensure warm hospitality. It is a place that attracts both locals and visitors seeking something special—whether for a relaxed drink or a hearty meal. The focus is on preserving the building's history while providing a contemporary experience, giving the establishment a unique position in York's culinary scene.

This place has the best selection of craft beers I've seen in a long time. We bought beer to take out although there is a drink in option available too.

Run by KIds! I popped in yesterday for a few drinks only to be served by a person who was just rude and child like the glass he provided me was warm and I ask him to run it under the tap to cooler it down he said had just washed it a more or less refused to give me a new colder glass!! I was lost for words and just walked out I will never go back there.

Sitting in bar area being drowned out by screaming and rather loud people that want the whole bar area to hear what they are saying. Had one pint and had to leave as we could not speak to the person sitting next to me. We actually resorted to texting each other so we could have a conversation.

Awesome selection of craft beers and spirits, surley staff without any kind of communication and automatic star off for not accepting cash. I'm sure that wasn't the case when we drank in a while ago but won't be back if you don't want real money.

House of Trembling Madness is a proper hidden gem in York! From the outside, it looks like just an off licence, but head upstairs, and you’ll find a quirky little pub full of character. We stopped in for a few beers, and the selection was incredible everything from German and Belgian brews to Irish classics. The downstairs shop is a beer lover’s paradise, and upstairs, you can enjoy the same great selection in a cozy, medieval style setting. If you’re into your beers, this place is a must visit. Definitely recommend!

Amazing bar with a fabulous range of wines and spirits to buy in the shop below! A visit to the loo also gives you inspiration to buy a vast range of spirits too!

Excellent place to visit in York. Superb upstairs bar with a great range on offer. As for downstairs, quite possibly one of the best range of ales, spirits and meads (plus lots more) on offer. The staff downstairs were super friendly and very helpful, too helpful as my backpack was somewhat heavier on my return journey! 😆

Live this place, good selection of drinks, we only had light snacks but they were very tasty and nicely presented, the beer and cheese soup was very good.

Not many bars have a lion’s head above the bar. A fun place to visit, the decor is unique, never seen so much curio in such a small space. A great selection of beers with varying strengths, prices are fair given the location. You need to access this place via the ground floor bottle shop. Staff very helpful with the speciality beers and you can sample first. The food menu looks fun, so we’ll be back to try some next time.
